My name is Ryan Miller and I am a Junior at the University
of Oklahoma. I am on my way to getting a masters degree in Accounting. I am
from Tulsa, Oklahoma and have lived there all my life. I have a twin sister
that also goes to the University of Oklahoma and is working on getting a double
major in Marketing and Management. I decided to get a degree in accounting
because my dad is a bank president and my mom is a CFO so ive just grown up around
business. I have a 3 year old half shitzu half bishon frisse puppy named
Sophie. When I’m on break I work at Jenks Intermediate before/after school
program and summer camp. I have worked there since my senior year of high
school. I was actually in the same program that I work for now when I was
growing up. Some of my favorite field trips that we went on this summer was
getting to go to a ropes course, white water bay water park, and frontier city
amusement park. My favorite thing about my job is getting to work with kids and
be a sort of role model to them. When I was in the same program the counselors
always made the camp way more fun, and that’s what I like to do for my kids.
Besides working this summer I went on a family vacation to London, England.
This was really cool for me because I have never been to Europe and I’ve always
wanted to go there because I’m a huge soccer fan. While I was there I got to
see the Tower of London, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Standford Bridge Soccer
Stadium, Buckingham Palace, and the FA Cup Soccer Final between Manchester
United vs. Crystal Palace. In my spare time I like to play soccer, golf, and
watch movies with my dad.
Hi Ryan!
ReplyDeleteThat’s cool that you have a twin! I have three siblings but we are all three years apart. I have a dog that is half shitzu. But my dogs other half is West Highland Terrier. She’s my baby and she sleeps with me when I go home.
I’m so jealous that you went abroad. Most of my friends have been through study abroad programs but I haven’t had the opportunity yet… I hope you got a lot of good photos!
Hi Ryan!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome that you've gone so far with Jenks Intermediate! I know so many people from OU that went to Jenks, it seems like an awesome place. Also, London is seriously the best. I am so glad you got to experience it! I know soccer is huge over there, so I'm sure you were thrilled. My brother-in-law loves Everton.
So far I've been to Paris, London, Aruba, Vancouver and Turks and Caicos! There are a few more, but those are my favorite. I definitely want to explore France/the whole other side of the world out soon. :)
That is so cool that you and your twin sister both go to OU, Ryan... have you ever had classes together? It sounds like your majors might intersect in some classes! Twins are a fabulous topic to explore in folklore and mythology too, starting with two of the most famous twins ever: the god Apollo and his twin sister Artemis (if you are doing any of the Classical reading options, you might even run into them). If you're curious about that, there's a whole huge article at Wikipedia all about the folklore and myths and legends about twins: Twins in mythology (it mentions Apollo and Artemis among so many others) ... lots of project possibilities there! :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Ryan, nice to meet you! I think it’s cool how you’re able to be role models for those kids, and it definitely sounds fun going on all those field trips.
ReplyDeleteIt also sounds like you had a great time in London, I’ve also wanted to see Europe one day, so it’s nice that you got to experience that! I bet it was nice meeting people around London as well.
Sophie is very cute by the way!
Hi Ryan! Love how you strive to be a role model for kids, I am apart of BBBS and love helping and spending time with my little brother. I think we have a responsibility to the younger generation to help them grow into leaders. Wow I wish I could go to Europe. I still have not been, but I want to really bad. I bet London is amazing. I have been to India which was amazing, but next on the list is Europe for sure.
ReplyDeleteRyan, You sound like a crazy driven person! That is awesome that you are getting your masters in accounting. I am so awful at math so it is inspiring to hear that you want to make a career out of it. You are such an amazing role model to those younger kids! Do you plan on continuing working with the Jenkins school and the summer camp once you graduate? I bet you parents have a lot of great advice and insight for your future career path! Best of luck on your junior year!
ReplyDeleteRyan,
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! It sounds like you had a pretty good summer. I also worked at a camp this past summer break, and I like the same things about it. Being a role model to kids and getting to talk to them about their lives and experiences is pretty indescribable. I have also been to London!! It is still one of my favorite places I have ever visited. It looks like we went to a lot of the same places, too!
Ryan,
ReplyDeleteI am very jealous that you got see the FA Cup final, I was streaming it live. I am a huge soccer fan as well. I think that it is great that you are so dedicated to your kids, that is one of the reasons why I am pursuing a degree in academia so that one day I can mentor somebody and promote a positive feeling of science into them. It is common for minorities to get unencouraged when pursuing a degree in science as they are often underrepresented and it is one of my goals to change that.
Hey Ryan, I'm also from Tulsa! Did you grow up in Jenks? I have some friends who went there!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really great that you enjoy working with kids during the summer, and also cool that you went through the same program. Talk about full circle.
And accounting? Phew, I can't image working with all that math all of the time. I bet it'll be a good, steady career, though. It's great that your family is in that industry, and can help you get a head start! Best of luck!
Hi, Ryan!
ReplyDeleteI wish my siblings were at the same school as me at the same time- mine were just old enough to miss me. I think it's really cool that you're pursuing something that you know so much about!
I really admire that you work at a summer camp- what a cool experience! I'm also super jealous of the adventurous summer that you had, and your trip to England!
Nice to meet you!
Emily
Hi Ryan,
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you went to Jenks high school then? I actually went to Union so I know lots of people from Jenks as well! Its really cool that you get to go back and help out kids who are in the position you once were in. If more people did that, I bet our communities would be far more prosperous!
I am so jealous you got to see the FA Cup Final live, I am also an avid soccer fan. Have you been watching any of the Premier League thus far? Or do you have a FC team you root for?
Nice to meet you and cannot wait to read some of your retellings!
Belle
Hi Ryan,
ReplyDeleteI really admire you for doing accounting! My major was Business Management when I started out as a freshman, but I decided the math was just too much, so I changed to public relations which is all about writing. Accounting is a great field to be in though, so I'm glad you enjoy it! Good luck this year!

ReplyDeleteRyan,
ReplyDeleteI also have a twin sister, you don't see fraternal twins that often. She goes to SMU however. I think it's interesting that both of you decided to go into business, even when considering your the educational and professional backgrounds of your parents.
Thank you so much for sharing, good luck with the rest of your semester and with senior year.
Andrew
Ryan,
ReplyDeleteWow I'm always impressed with people who can do stuff like accounting. Mainly because I was never good at math. So I'm guessing your doing the 5 year master program. Thats really awesome! Your dog is so adorable by the way! I also really like your background for your blog!
I can't wait to read more of your stuff. Good luck on the rest of the semester.
Hi Ryan!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on making it to senior year! I have respect for you for pursuing accounting. I cried during my business calc final and realized I could never be a business major. However, I think it's cool you are wanting to work in the same field as your family. With accounting, are you wanting to be a CPA? I wish you all the luck!!
Hi, Ryan!
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice how you are working at the same program you went to while you grew up. It is great because transitioning from being a camp goer to a leader, you understand what the kids will feel and what should be done. It sounds like you went to awesome places at London during vacation and had a great time. Good luck with getting your master’s degree and the rest of the semester!
Hey Ryan!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to meet you! Like you, I am also in a graduate program! Are you doing an accelerated program? I am also a twin and after reading other people's introductions it seems like there are a ton of twins in the class!! It is so cool that you got to of to England with your family! What was your favorite place you visited? Good luck on your graduate program and keep crunching those numbers!
Hey Ryan,
ReplyDeleteIt's cool to see that you volunteer at an After School Program. I'm sure the kids there really appreciate it, and it's good for them to have someone to look up to.
I recently went to Europe too, and I think London is actually a great place to visit! My favorite part was probably visiting Westminster Abbey.
Anyway, best of luck to you in this class, graduate school, and the future.
Hey Ryan! I also work for an after school program! I love being around the kids so my job doesn't feel like work to me. I get paid for getting to play with kids. It's so cool that you got to travel to Europe. I'm actually spending a month in Europe this coming summer and I'm super excited about it.
ReplyDeleteHey Ryan!
ReplyDeleteI think it’s great that you go back to work at the after school program and summer camp. You seem very involved and I bet the kids love you. I think it’s awesome that you are being a role model to the kids. When I was younger, I always looked up to my mentors so I know they really appreciate you! Your summer vacation to London sounds so fun. I bet you had a great time! Best of luck to you in the future!
Hey Ryan!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of surprised this is the first time I'm stumbling upon your blog since it's so late in the semester. I'm glad though, because the introductions are my favorite thing to read/comment on! It's cool that you have a twin sister. I love twins! London is such a cool place. It's awesome that you got to go there. Anyway, good luck with the rest of your semester!
Hey Ryan! I went to London this summer and absolutely loved it! We saw a lot of the same things, as tourists do. I was in London when Man U won and when we went to Old Trafford a few weeks later, they had just hired a new manager as well as had that bomb scare at the stadium. I'm sure you saw plenty of fans dressed up going to a football game. They take outfitting in the team colors very seriously and did a lot of singing. I have a lot of respect for someone who can learn numbers so well. Accounting is hard, so I've heard from my friends in Price, so best of luck! It sounds like you have plenty of readily available tutors in your house.
